| Publisher Description: This fascinating book captures some of the cultural distinctiveness of the nongovernment organizations (NGOs) in India and illuminates them within a feminist context and with concepts and literature familiar to Association for Research on Nonprofict Organizations and Voluntary Acton (ARNOVA) readers. --NONPROFIT AND VOLUNTARY SECTOR QUARTERLY Adopting an inter-disciplinary approach, this book provides an in-depth understanding of why Indian NGOs run by women for women, tend to be successful. Based on first-hand observations spanning five years and interviews with 20 founders of NGOs, this book explores the factors that motivate and facilitate women entrepreneurship in the development sector. It examines the organizational structures that have evolved based on feminist ideology and the services provided (e.g. self-help groups and micro-finance). The authors also discuss the social impact of these NGOs in promoting both development and women's empowerment. They show how small NGOs are particularly effective in garnering support from the grass-roots and in tapping the knowledge base of local communities. Overall, the authors find that women entrepreneurs act as facilitators with a unique leadership style and that they encourage community-based movements grounded in local issues. As a result, these NGOs are successfully changing the landscape of rural poverty in India while ushering in sustainable development. |
Contributor Bio(s): Ranade, Bhagyashree: - Bhagyashree Ranade is CEO, Marketing and Market Research Consultants and Discovery and Transition. She is also a trustee for the Institute for Women Entrepreneurial Development and Animal Life in Pune (India). Her publications have appeared in the Journal of Community Practice, Nonprofit Management and Leadership, Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, and Social Development Issues. She has coauthored the book, Grass-roots NGOs by Women for Women: The Driving Force of Development in India (SAGE, 2006) along with F. Handy, M. Kassam, and S. Feeney. Handy, Femida: -Femida Handy is Professor of Nonprofit Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Her academic writing is on philanthropy and volunteering, and her recent coedited book, The Palgrave Handbook of Global Philanthropy (2015) is a comprehensive reference guide to the practice of philanthropy across 26 nations and regions across the world. Dr Handy is currently Editor-in-Chief of Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, a premier journal in the field. She has several award-winning publications and has coauthored five books and over 100 publications. She has also coauthored a children's book called Sandy's Incredible Shrinking Footprint. Kassam, Meenaz: -Meenaz Kassam is Associate Professor at the American University of Sharjah. She has coauthored three books and several papers, including an award-winning publication. Dr Kassam's research interests include nonprofit entrepreneurship, volunteerism, and women's empowerment. Her teaching interests include environmental issues, the sociology of human behavior, and sociological theory. She is also involved in working with NGOs in various countries. |
