Publisher Description: This is the first of three volumes on the Bornu Mission (1822-25) which form part of a series of volumes on the exploration of the Niger. They consist of the edited text of the 'Narrative of Travels and Discoveries in Northern and Central Africa in the Years 1822,1823 and 1824' by Major D. Denham, Captain H. Clapperton and Dr W. Oudney. This volume begins with the editor's introduction in which he discusses the text and the historical background and fills in the details of the Narrative. It is followed by the first two annotated chapters of the Narrative, together with reconstructed itineraries of the various expeditions. It also includes some additional documents by Denham and Oudney which throw further light on the Mission. The second volume covers the Mission's exploration of Bornu and adjoining countries, with notes and itineraries. The third volume is devoted to Clapperton's account of his exploration of Hausa and his stay in Sokoto. The main pagination of this and the two following volumes is continuous. This is a new print-on-demand hardback edition of the volume first published in 1966. |
