Even though Lincoln had less than one year of formal education he was smart and studied hard to become a lawyer. He married a well educated young lady from Kentucky by the name of Mary Todd. They became parents of four sons. In 1860 he was elected the 16th President of the United States. On April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth shot President Lincoln while he and Mrs. Lincoln watched a play at Ford's Theatre in Washington DC. Lincoln died the next day. President Lincoln, one of Americas greatest Presidents, ended slavery and guided the United States through the civil war.
