Publisher Description:
Arthur Schnitzler (1862 1931) was an Austrian playwright, author and doctor. SchnitzlerZs writings were criticized for their anti-Semitism and their explicit descriptions of sexuality. Schnitzler kept a diary for many years and for a period of time he recorded every orgasm and with whom in great detail. Schnitzler was branded as a pornographer after the release of his play Reigen, and his works were later cited as an example of "Jewish filth". Bertha Garlan is a young widow with a small child. She teaches piano in her small town. Her friend, Frau Rupius is traveling to Vienna and invites Bertha along. Bertha remembers her first love. She idealizes the time she spent with Emil and, without properly considering the consequences, writes him a letter. He is by now a famous violinist. Bertha hopes that he remembers her. He does and his reply, which comes quickly, suggests a meeting.
