Publisher Description:
First published in 1921, "Alice Adams" is a novel by American dramatist and Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Newton Booth Tarkington (1869-1946). Among only three other novelists to have won the Pulitzer Prize more than once, Tarkington was one of the greatest authors of the 1910s and 1920s who helped usher in Indiana's Golden Age of literature. One of his most famous and successful novels, "Alice Adams" follows the eponymous character and her struggle up the social ladder from humble beginnings in order to win the favour of a well-to-do young man. A classic tale of ambition and deceit set in the American Midwest following WWI. Other notable works by this author include: "Monsieur Beaucaire" (1900), "The Turmoil" (1915), and "The Magnificent Ambersons" (1918). Read & Co. Classics are republishing this novel now in a new edition complete with a biography of the author from "Encyclop dia Britannica" (1922).
