The second story, King of the Defiances, is the story of Big Jim Jackson, who intends to make a fortune by logging off the best railroad-tie timber in Arizona, and his clash with former manhunter Troy Cameron, the leader of a group of small cattle ranchers who stand in Jackson's way. Jackson now holds notes on the ranchers' land and plans to foreclose if the notes aren't met on time. And he has a hired crew of gun hands ready to use force against anyone who resists. |
Contributor Bio(s): Bonham, Frank: - Frank Bonham (1914-1988) was a Western and young adult writer. He wrote nearly fifty novels, including The Nitty Gritty and Durango. Several of his works have been published posthumously, many of which were drawn from his pulp magazine stories, originally published between 1941 and 1952. Pronzini, Bill: -Bill Pronzini has been nominated for or won every prize offered to crime fiction writers, including the 2008 Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America. It is no wonder, then, that Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine said of him: Complexity of characterization, puzzle, and theme support the case for Pronzini as the finest American detective novelist in current practice. He lives and writes in California with his wife, the crime novelist Marcia Muller. Armando Duran has appeared in films, television, and regional theaters throughout the West Coast. For the last decade he has been a member of the resident acting company at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. In 2009 he was named by AudioFile as Best Voice in Biography and History for his narration of Che Guevara. A native Californian, he divides his time between Los Angeles and Ashland, Oregon. |
