Contributor Bio(s): Johns, Timothy R.: - Tim was educated at The Hawthorns Prep School in Surrey with which he has a 'man & boy' association of over 50 years: pupil in the 1960s, staff member from 1987 (including Head of Departments and Director of Studies), Headmaster from 1992 to retirement in 2015. He read Geography at Exeter University, completed Middle School Teacher Training at the University of London and began his teaching career in State Primary Schools in London. As Headteacher, he instigated the planned growth of The Hawthorns from 280 to 550 pupils, phasing out boarding, bringing in co-education and introducing School Improvement Planning. He passionately believes in all roundedness and excellence, with individualized learning initiatives and a Christian ethos. He promotes the School's belief that 'Happy children learn' and staff too, amidst society's complex challenges. With experience as a Governor, inspector and Chairman of IAPS, he sees the bigger picture, has contributed to elements of the National scene and enjoys guiding schools into best practice. He is a keen sportsman, musician and father of two, with a delightful French wife, Evelyne. Having a deep knowledge of the traditions of the Hawthorns, he has lived and breathed its vision and successful development.
