Publisher Description:
Today in Canada, more people from various ethnic minority backgrounds are considering a career in teaching than ever before. This is especially true of ethnic minority women, as teaching has typically been seen as a good career choice for women. However, little attention has been given to the challenges these women sometimes face once they are working in the school system. This study draws upon the experiences of a group of ethnic minority women teachers at different stages of their careers, who have faced various struggles in the teaching profession because of their gender and ethnicity. The main issues they discuss, including racism, sexism, classism and ageism, are examined in the context of institutionalized racism and sexism in Canada, and its historical background. This book is important for teachers, academics and policymakers who are concerned about race and gender equality in education, and for people who are considering or have already embarked upon a teaching career. It also contributes to debates about the role of visible minority teachers in schools and the extent to which they are able to effect change.
