Publisher Description:
The issue of land is a highly contentious one in Ethiopia. It has been a key factor in Ethiopian history. It has played key roles in the survival or removal of political regimes. This book, therefore, focuses on land disputes and mechanisms for land disputes settlement among the Tulama Oromo in Ethiopia. The book uncovers that causes and extent of land disputes vary through time among the Tulama Oromo. It also witnesses the magnitude of land disputes are large in number in the area. The work also reveals the existence of different mechanisms of land disputes settlements. They are generally divided into informal (customary)and formal (state) dispute settlement mechanisms. The presence of these mechanisms of land dispute settlement provided the local community with the options. However, the disputants manipulated these settings for their own advantages. This book suggests that neither formal nor customary dispute settlement institutions alone can solve land disputes since both having weaknesses. The book, therefore, concludes only their mutual collaboration leads to positive interaction required for reducing land disputes.
