Publisher Description:
This book is an extension of my master's thesis which was submitted to Kenyatta University in 1990. At the time I was writing my thesis, the concept of guidance and counseling in secondary schools was not as advanced as it is now. In Kenya, counselors are regular classroom teachers and then they have extra responsibility. They mostly deal with referral cases, as students are reluctant to the use guidance services or centers in the schools. The observation above shows that counselors and the other groups were incongruent in their perception of the role of the counselor. This calls for the need to raise the level of awareness about guidance and counseling within the school community and among students in particular. Guidance and counseling services are relatively new in Kenyan schools. They are viewed with skepticism by the students. However, it is the responsibility of the counselors to create awareness among the latter on the importance of these services. Counselors should also try to perceive students' needs from their perceptive.
