A Glimpse into the Future shares the hopes and fears of young writers as they tackle the challenges of tomorrow. These stories provide cautionary tales of the future that encourage each of us to make a positive difference. North Carolina students age 8 through 17 participate yearly in Scenario Writing, a North Carolina Future Problem Solving (NC FPS) competition. Each year, students in grades 4-12 develop short stories related to one of five Future Problem Solving global issues. The scenario topics the students explored in the 2019-2020 academic year were De-extinction, Gamification, Living in Poverty, and Sleep Patterns. Winners at the state level in each of the divisions were invited to submit to the international competition, where the topic was Terraforming. Students research one global issue and imagine how it may affect their futures. Their challenge is to create stories that showcase their creativity and reveal insight into the future through their studies. The story is set at least 20 years in the future and is an imagined, but logical, outcome of actions or events taking place in the world. Enjoy a glimpse into the future through the eyes of our youth. Twenty-three intriguing stories await the reader. Some of the stories in this volume share a bleak future that has been created by society while others reveal solutions to the problems we may face. In the end, they all share a hope that each of us working together can make a positive difference. North Carolina Future Problem Solving (NC FPS) is an affiliate of Future Problem Solving International (FPSPI). NC FPS offers three competitive components: Global Issues Problem Solving, Community Problem Solving, and Scenario Writing. More than 24,000 students in 37+ states and 14+ countries participate yearly. With Future Problem Solving, students learn the creative problem solving process to share their ideas and accept the challenge of making a positive difference in their world.
