This simply told biography covers Bernstein's life, from childhood fascination with a piano through his meteoric rise in the music world. While candid about the common criticism that Bernstein spread himself too thin, the text asserts that he made music accessible to many new listeners. The book is somewhat over-designed and illustrated with photographs, paintings, and tongue-in-cheek cartoons. A list of compositions would have been helpful. Copyright 1998 Horn Book Guide Reviews
