Gr 3-6-These selections explore many of the amazing, disgusting, and destructive species of plants that populate the world. From the stinky dead horse arum that attracts blowflies by emitting a putrid odor to the broad baobab tree once used as an Australian jailhouse, these overviews offer students plants worthy of investigation. Large, brightly colored close-up photos ranging from beautiful to bizarre are nicely placed to support the well-written narratives. Each chapter begins with a catchy opening that's likely to entice students to continue reading. Although the discussions sometimes slow down under the weight of instruction, the authors attempt to enliven the subject matter with graphic imagery and interesting facts. Clear, logically described contents and headings will lead young researchers to desired information. Overall, these titles will best suit students writing science reports or libraries seeking to enhance their botany collections.-Jenna Miller, Alachua County Library District, Gainesville, FL Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
