These geography reference books disguised as travel guides use tidbits of trivia and engaging photographs (e.g., the tomato-throwing festival in [cf2]Espana[cf1]) to try to hook readers. Though it's an interesting approach, the encyclopedic texts tend to overpower the guidebook format, and many of the pictures are stock. Translation errors, typos, and several English-only resource lists weaken the Spanish-language editions. Reading list, timeline. Glos., ind. These profusely illustrated leveled-text editions present contemporary but insubstantial views of the two countries. India's many religions are introduced, but there is no word about the strife caused by some adherents, and the book barely mentions Gandhi. [cf2]Japan[cf1] only briefly mentions World War II and the post-war economic and technology boom. Reading list, timeline. Glos., ind. Two countries with ancient traditions and cultures are profiled in solid volumes that also explore geography, economics, and the arts. The textbook-quality prose is enlivened by appealing color photographs, charts, and maps. Information boxes contain supplemental information about notable people, places, and events. The presentations are a bit crowded; time lines are included. Bib., glos., ind. Copyright 2001 Horn Book Guide Reviews
