The Far Reaches of Empire chronicles the half century of Anglo-American efforts to establish dominion in Nova Scotia, an important French foothold in the New World. He is the author of The First Way of War: American War Making on the Frontier, 1607-1814, which won the Society for Military History's Distinguished Book Award for 2007.
