Stockbroker Morrie Clay sees an opportunity to make a quick commission and buys $750,000 in shares in a hedge fund. In order to put the trade through, however, he needs forge the client's signature on the purchase agreement. Confident that his illegal trade will never be discovered, he is shocked to find that the client intends to change brokerage firms. An audit will disclose the trade, and Clay will lose his job and his license. He tells his wife Monica that their high style living with their two sons will come crashing down when the authorities are called to investigate. Clay has the Fourth of July weekend to find a way out of the crisis. It appears that his troubles may be over, however, when his client -- Rene McAllister, the wife of multimillion Mac McAllister -- disappears from a late night party. Her body is discovered the next morning. Authorities want to dismiss her death as accidental, but Detective James Raker, still in the throes of grief over his own wife's untimely death, thinks otherwise. When Jamie Sherman, another neighbor of the Clay's, turns up death and adrift in his fishing boat, Raker is convinced the two deaths are related. He also certain that the killer may have another victim in mind and he races to prevent a third murder.
