He begins his quest in the Latin quarter of Paris, but after the long lapse, the pleasures there were ashes on his lips. Then like a refreshing draught came the thought of a boyhood experience at an English watering place with Mary Page, his first love. From this point on we have the true theme of the story, Conrad's attempt to regain youth according to the recipe that a man is young as often as he falls in love.
