In 'Waking Up: A Guide for Transformation' Michael Gallagher tells the story of his unusual childhood growing up in the Armageddon cult of Jehovah's Witnesses with his mother, while visiting his addict father in a maximum-security prison. He takes the reader through this tangled childhood experience into his own near-death adult story of alcoholism and cocaine addiction. From this backdrop, he tells how he finally woke up and shares the tools he used to transform his life.

What people are saying

"According to the adage, paraphrased from Nietzsche, "Whatever doesn't kill us makes us stronger," Michael Gallagher is a survivor, with a powerful story to tell. What he has lived through has made him a stronger writer and left him with some profound lessons to share."-Don McLeese - University of Iowa journalism professor and veteran music and culture critic for the Chicago Sun-Times, the Austin American-Statesman, and Rolling Stone.

"Michael is a rare combination of philosopher and storyteller. His book Waking Up was exactly what I needed to make a lasting change in my life. -Adam Carroll - Speaker, entrepreneur, and host of the Build A Bigger Life Podcast"

"It is rare to come across a book that is as genuine and entertaining as this one. Topics like addiction and mental health can be sensitive to discuss but the way Michael candidly shares what he went through makes his story extremely relatable. That kind of vulnerability is at the heart of what makes us all human."-Shawn C.

"This book was so impactful for me. I read it cover to cover in one day. I could not put it down. The vulnerability and honest story telling causes an immediate connection. I cried, several times to be honest, I laughed out loud and scared the people around me at the airport, I found many useful suggestions that I could immediately implement. Thank you for putting this out there. My hope is that it will resonate with many others as much as it did with me."-Matt B.
