Publisher Description: "Anything can happen in the dark..." After Midnight is a collection of gothic short stories based on the folk legends and cautionary tales of the unknown that were collected in Britain by missing author Sidney Wainwright. All the tales are born from that inane human fascination with mystery and the macabre. From sinister unsolved murders or the exploits of slavers to the realms of the supernatural, and the mysteries of the human mind, these tales heighten the senses and take you back to those childhood fears that we are all drawn to once again when the lights go out. |
Contributor Bio(s): Wainwright, Sidney: - "While I could tell you the flavour of Mr Wainwright's pipe tobacco there is little I really know about him. I can't tell you the names of his parents, where he was born, the date of his birth, or even which year. What I do know is that the dark tales of folklore and local legend that he grew up with left a deep and lasting impression on him. The stories in 'After Midnight' were penned by Wainwright in the 1940's and 1950s from his travels and investigations in the first half of the twentieth century. They draw on the folklore of the places in Britain that he travelled to during that period. In 1959, after setting out on an expedition to New Guinea, Wainwright disappeared when his ship, the Aurora, vanished in the Atlantic Ocean. To add intrigue to the unfortunate events, the only copy of the 'After Midnight' manuscript at the time was lost in a mysterious fire at the premises of his publisher. I tried many times after I lost my friend to search for his origins, for his home and family. To my amazement, all my inquiries were without success. It was as if my friend and client, who I had known in flesh and blood for years had never existed. But that is another story... - Archibald Jerome -" |
