Contributor Bio(s): Shabazz, Jamel: - Jamel Shabazz was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of fifteen, he picked up his first camera and started to document his peers. Inspired by photographers Leonard Freed, James Van Der Zee, and Gordon Parks, he was marveled with their documentation of the African American community. In 1980 as a concerned photographer with a clear vision he embarked on a mission to extensively document various aspects of life in New York City, from youth culture to a wide range of social conditions. Due to its spontaneity and uniqueness, the streets and subway system became backdrops for many of his photographs. Shabazz says his goal is to contribute to the preservation of world history and culture. In the past 10 years he has had over two dozen solo exhibitions; "Men of Honor," "A Time Before Crack," "Pieces of a Man," "Represent," When Two Worlds Meet," "Back in the Days," and "Seconds of my Life," which have been shown from Argentina to The Netherlands, England, Italy, Germany, France, Japan and throughout the United States. Group exhibitions include Art Basel; Miami, the Brooklyn Museum, the Newark Museum, the Contact Photo Festival, the Victoria and Albert Museum, The Studio Museum in Harlem, Duke University, and the Adidas Photo Festival in Ethiopia. Over the years Jamel has volunteered, working with a wide range organizations centered on inspiring young people in the field of photography and social responsibility. In addition, he has been a teaching artist with the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation; the Bronx Museum's Teen Council youth program, The International Center of Photography, Friends of the Island Academy; and the Studio Museum in Harlem's Expanding the Walls Project. Adding to his community service he has lectured at the International Center for Photography, Fashion Institute of Technology, The, The Brooklyn Historic Foundation, Haverford College and Parsons New School of DesignSmith, Terrence: - Terrence Smith (P/K/A Terrence Sanders) (b.1969 Pineville, Louisiana) has contributed to the landscape of contemporary art as a poet, filmmaker, artist, photographer, gallerist, curator, musician, publisher and editor-in-chief of Artvoices Magazine. Sanders mission as Editor-In-Chief of Artvoices Magazine (Established 2008) is to create a platform for emerging, neglected and under recognized artists who create important and relevant works of art arguably. Sanders, is the father of noted artist Lucien Smith. In the past 25 years Sanders has created 33 bodies of work featured in exhibits worldwide. Sanders modus operandi is rooted in social activism. In New Orleans he created a memorial featuring the 1,800 plus names engraved in gold leaf on granite on the façade of the 'Saratoga Building' in New Orleans dedicated to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The memorial's a welcoming gesture of forgiveness and unity for the city New Orleans. He produced and directed the documentaries New Orleans Contemporary Art: Post Katrina and Spare Change, which focused on the Homeless epidemic in Los Angeles. Sanders also created the art web series 'Real Art....Real Talk w/ host Clayton Campbell. Sanders opened 4 contemporary art galleries over the past 11 years: Terrence Sanders Gallery (New Orleans), Untitled Art Projects (Los Angeles) and Sanders, Smith & Stokes (New Orleans) and Artists 101 in Los Angeles. Sanders curated over 50 exhibitions including '60 Americans' 'We Got Next' and the 'Saratoga Collection'. Sanders exhibited more than 100 visual artists without representation at art fairs in Europe and the United States. Jen comes from a background of working across both corporate and agency environments in the creative capacities of designer, production artist, and art director.Farber, Paul: - Paul M. Farber is a scholar of American and Urban Studies. He is currently a Postdoctoral Writing Fellow at Haverford College. Farber received a PhD in American Culture from the University of Michigan. He previously was the Doctoral Fellow at the German Historical Institute in Washington, D.C., and a visiting scholar in the Urban Studies program at the University of Pennsylvania.Jennings, Terrence: - Photographer Terrence Jennings was born on the planet called Brooklyn, NY. He began professionally photographing in 1999 and since, his images have appeared in such publications as People Magazine, The New York Times, Vibe Magazine, Rolling Stone Magazine, Uptown Magazine, Trace Magazine, Hip Hop Weekly, The Source Magazine, Savoy Magazine, BET.com, The London Observer, The Amsterdam News, The Village Voice and several others. His corporate commissions include projects for Prudential and Red Bull. He currently works as the resident documentarian for YouthBuild Newark. His first short film, FREEDOM OR EVERYBODY DIES was produced for The Museum of African American Music.
