The Communists sought to transform this agrarian country into an "industrial nation," which meant developing the military industry and turning the agricultural sector into a "kolkhoz" system based on the Soviet model. Instead of employing intellectuals and civilian professionals, positions of leadership were filled by ideologically reliable workers, and their incompetence led to the 1956 Revolution and War of Independence. These events were met with harsh reprisals, though the taste of freedom was not quickly forgotten by the Hungarian people. Nevertheless, the Party was able to maintain power in the 1970s and 1980s primarily through foreign loans. |
