Annotation: This book explores the resurgence of interest among younger artists in working with light as a material. With sixty-three color illustrations, "Artificial Light" features new sculpture and installations by the international artists Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla, Spencer Finch, Ceal Floyer, Ivn Navarro, Nathaniel Rackowe, and Douglas Ross. Influenced by the pioneers of light sculpture from the 1960s and 1970s, including Dan Flavin, James Turrell, and Bruce Nauman, this younger generation expands the use of light to address issues of perception, memory, energy, and power.

The exhibition's curator, John B. Ravenal, contributes an introduction on the use of light in art along with individual essays describing each artist's work. Additional essays by two guest authors place these artists' work in the context of light-based art by their predecessors and peers.

Publisher Description:

Surface Charge thoroughly alters the traditional museum practice of importing art works in order to display them on the walls or floor. The works in Surface Charge were
created directly on and with the walls of the Anderson Gallery, turning its very surfaces into active forces, as opposed to neutral supports. A variety of techniques were used, and most of the works existed only for the duration of the exhibition. The participating artists are Ragna R bertsd ttir (Iceland), Karin Sander (Germany), Odili Donald Odita (Nigeria/U.S.), Elana Herzog (U.S.), Lawrence Weiner (U.S.), Karina Peisajovich (Argentina), Kim Schoenstadt (U.S.), Katrin Sigurdardottir (Iceland), Maix Mayer (Germany), Lisa Sigal (U.S.), and Sally Smart (Australia).
