Publisher Description:

If you are facing a cancer-related challenge or loss, people tell you to have hope. How are you supposed to find that hope? What should you hope for? In this groundbreaking book, Wendy S. Harpham, MD, shares her hard-earned wisdom about finding and nourishing the best hopes for you. The innovative format of illustrated aphorisms with succinct supporting text make the ideas remarkably accessible and memorable. According to New York Times health columnist Jane Brody, "Healing Hope -- inspired and inspiring words to live by."

From Dr. Harpham's perspective as a longtime cancer survivor and leader in survivorship, she offers powerful insights and practical tips that encourage readers to think about hope in new ways. Patients and families are guided to specific hopes that help them obtain sound knowledge and take effective action. Since proper action increases patients' chance--their hope--of the best outcome, Healing Hope helps patients get good care and live as fully as possible today, tomorrow and every day.

Best-selling author Wendy S. Harpham, MD, is a highly regarded physician-survivor whose contributions to survivorship have earned her numerous national awards (www.wendyharpham.com).

Contributor Bio(s): Harpham, Wendy S.: - Wendy Harpham is a doctor of internal medicine, 27-year cancer survivor, best-selling author and nationally recognized speaker. She has devoted her career to helping patients get good care and live as fully as possible. Born, raised and educated in New York, she moved to Texas in 1979 to complete her post-graduate training in internal medicine. In 1983, she opened a solo practice at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas, where she developed teaching tools to educate her patients about their illnesses and treatments. In 1990, she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. When ongoing illness forced Dr. Harpham to stop practicing medicine and redefine her career, she turned to writing and speaking as ways to continue to educate, comfort and inspire patients. In addition to her groundbreaking books and articles, Dr. Harpham has been writing a popular and award-winning regular column for Oncology Times, "View from the Other Side of the Stethoscope." She is an adjunct professor at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), where she co-teaches an honor seminar, "Medicine, Politics and Philosophy," as well as mentors premedical students and offers workshops, "Writing a Personal Statement " (for grad school and scholarship applications). After many courses of treatment, including investigational drugs received in three clinical trials, Dr. Harpham's lymphoma has remained in remission. Limited stamina prevents her from returning to clinical medicine. In her free time, she enjoys reading, classical music, visits with her children and grandson, and time with her husband, Ted, the Dean of the Honors College at UTD. She looks forward to expanding her collection of commemorative thimbles, which represents all the cities in which she has done work to help patients become Healthy Survivors.Mathes, Emma: - Dr. Harpham received her medical degree from the University of Rochester and trained in internal medicine at University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston and Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas. Seven years after opening her solo practice, she developed cancer and began writing and speaking about serious illness. The demands and effects of ongoing treatment eventually forced her to retire from clinical medicine. She's continued caring for patients by writing, lecturing, serving as a consultant and patient advocate on the local and national levels, and guiding and supporting patients and families who have contacted her. In addition to authoring 8 books (including two children's books and one book for clinicians), oncology textbook chapters (on late effects and survivorship) and many articles, she writes an award-winning regular column in Oncology Times, "View from the Other Side of the Stethoscope." Dr. Harpham travels coast-to-coast and internationally, delivering keynotes to medical audiences on healing clinician-patient bonds, narrowing the gap between actual and ideal care, and preserving compassion in modern medicine. In lectures to survivors and families, she advocates for science and healing clinician-patient bonds. She's been a leader in discussing rearing children when a parent has cancer, post-treatment fatigue, managing uncertainty and nourishing healing hopes. An adjunct professor at University of Texas at Dallas, Dr. Harpham co-teaches an honors seminar (Medicine, Politics and Philosophy) every semester and mentors premedical students one-on-one and through workshops and lectures. Her work led to her induction into the Texas Women's Hall of Fame and numerous prestigious awards.
