Otherwise the trucks were new and sleek, with all the great curves of a muscle rescue vehicle. They weren't called to the job, but Billy and Corri watched in horror as a small car ahead of them slid off the icy road, summersaulting forward and then sideways before landing upright in an ice-stubbled field. A giant gray ghost of smoke rose up from the car. A haunting image. There were two people inside the car. The driver was a man and the passenger...his pregnant wife. They stared straight ahead through the shattered windshield; a thousand fissures criss-crossing it. Billy opened their passenger door...this was enormously beyond any towing job he'd ever done. Would the little family survive? Was someone at fault? Why did Billy go to jail? |
