Publisher Description:
Jack Johnson had yet to beat Tommy Burns to a pulp when this book appeared in Paris in 1908. Jacques Mortane and Andr Linville were looking to promote the "Sweet Science" of boxing in France, and they published this manual to inform and encourage up-and-coming French boxers in the hopes of promoting a first generation of pugilists in their homeland. They enlisted the aid of the American champ Willie Lewis, as it had become clear that although boxing had a longer history in England, the Americans had utterly transformed the sport and were producing fighters who were a quantum level above the best of the Brits (largely thanks to footwork and the mighty right cross). John L. Sullivan had retired, Tommy Burns was king, Jack Johnson was ascendant, and a certain Jack Dempsey was but a star on the low horizon. Gloves were in and haymakers ("swings") were on their way out. One would think that MMA was something no one had considered, but in fact the authors saw fit to include a section on French Kickboxing ("or Savate, as our grandfathers called it") by V. Cast r s who was a student of the famous Charlemont. Cast r s lays out the basics of La Boxe Fran aise and makes the astute observation that while there were many excellent teachers in this native martial art, there were as yet no real 'fighters' - an entirely different sort of creature. Lace up your horsehair gloves and learn all about Kid MacCoy's corkscrew punch and the Lewis loop-de-loop in this fascinating glimpse into the evolution of the noble art of boxing.
