The shadow of enormous mortality still fell over mothers and babies, and it influenced doctors. Antibiotics didn't exist. Infant care was not developed to the degree it is now. The doctor was telling my mother and grandmother a straightforward and accepted truth of the times - 'Why attempt to give life to this premature and tiny baby? It will be difficult to rear, more prone to illness, and it will be harder for it to cope with life. It isn't breathing at the moment, so forget it and try again for a healthy baby. Leave it'. |
