Publisher Description:

Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) and Christina Rossetti (1830-1894) were both regarded as the female poet laureates of their time, and between them their writings spanned almost the entire Victorian age, from the end of Romanticism to the beginnings of Modernism. This selection of their shorter works contains all the major themes that animated them--social justice, faith, love, and mortality--and some of the best-loved poetry in the English language, including "In the Deep Midwinter" and "How Do I Love Thee?" These poems reflect the changing world in which they were composed, but they also reflect the complex passions of two extraordinary women.

Contributor Bio(s): Browning, Elizabeth Barrett: - Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) is generally considered the greatest of English poetesses. She was well educated for a woman of her time at home, being confined to bed by a lung complaint, possibly tuberculosis. The appearance of her Poems in 1844 attracted the attention of Robert Browning, who courted her in secret before eloping with her to Italy. There Elizabeth's health improved and she threw herself into politics, becoming a pioneer of early liberal movements.Bavidge, Rachel: -

Rachel Bavidge, an AudioFile Earphones Award-winning narrator, was born in North Shields, England, and moved to Oxford in her early teens. She has narrated numerous audiobooks and completed six months as a member of the BBC Radio Drama Company. Theater credits include Mrs. Boyle in Whose Life is it Anyway? and Margaret in Much Ado, both directed by Peter Hall. Television credits include The Bill, Casualty, Doctors, The IT Crowd, Inspector Lynley, Wire in the Blood, and Bad Girls.

Rossetti, Christina Georgina: -

Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830-1894) was one of the most important English women poets, in both range and quality. She was the youngest in an extraordinarily gifted family: her eldest brother Dante Gabriel founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and was a foremost poet and painter of the era; her other brother William became a prolific art and literary critic, editor, and memoirist; and her sister Maria went on to be a Dante scholar, respected Italian translator, author, and nun.

Rossetti wrote a variety of romantic, devotional, and children's poetry throughout her life and is most famous for her poem Goblin Market. Religious devotion came to play a major role in her life and much of her work is spiritual in nature. She never married.
