It was compiled by R. L. Bensly, a highly respected biblical scholar and a member of the committee that translated the English Revised Version of the Bible in the late nineteenth century, and edited after his death by fellow scholar W. E. Barnes. Barnes provides a translation of those texts that do not exist in ancient Greek, in addition to an introduction on the various forms of the text and their relationship to earlier accounts of the same incident.
