Amelia Edwards never married, but lived and traveled for much of her life with a female companion. Though she was a popular novelist, today you are most likely to come across her tales of travel. Her novel In the Days of My Youth begins: Sweet, secluded, shady Saxonholme I doubt if our whole England contains another hamlet so quaint, so picturesquely irregular, so thoroughly national in all its rustic characteristics. It lies in a warm hollow environed by hills.
