This has been identified by Patrick Spedding as the first collected London edition. The first two volumes of the second London edition are dated: 1747. Both volume and issue title pages are printed within an ornamental border and include vignettes, with motto from Dryden on titlepage of vol. I. Caption titles on the first page of text have engraved headpieces. Since the volume title pages were clearly printed and distributed as issues were purchased, it is difficult to be certain which general title pages represent a first printing for each volume. Within this first collected edition, individual copies may in fact have variant printings of some books. The variants are difficult to identify; for more information see: Spedding. Imprints for three of the four volumes are dated in roman, however the vol. III]Book XIII part title page has date in arabic. No general title page has been located for this volume (cf. Spedding). Frontis. in each vol. = plate. Title repeated as running title with book number on the same line.
