After he successfully completed two terms, Vice-president John Adams, a Federalist, defeated Jefferson in the 1796 election. During his one term, he encountered ferocious attacks by the Jeffersonian Republicans, as well as the dominant faction in his own Federalist Party led by his bitter enemy Alexander Hamilton. In 1800 Jefferson defeated Adams for the presidency in the 1800 election. The book looks at the political developments in the United States during the historic tenures of these first three presidents.
