Publisher Description:
Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The fourteenth century, with the absence of the popes during the Avignon Papacy, was a century of neglect and misery for the city of Rome, which dropped to its lowest level of population. The instability ended with the election of Martin V as pope, who was the first Roman pope who cared for monumental and artistic revitalization of the city. He set forth the Renaissance in Rome, a period from the late 15th to the mid-16th century, when the Papal city was the most important place of artistic production of the entire continent. The book studies the contributions of six popes during this period, and the significant artists in the reign of each of these popes. Project Webster represents a new publishing paradigm, allowing disparate content sources to be curated into cohesive, relevant, and informative books. To date, this content has been curated from Wikipedia articles and images under Creative Commons licensing, although as Project Webster continues to increase in scope and dimension, more licensed and public domain content is being added. We believe books such as this represent a new and exciting lexicon in the sharing of human knowledge.
