Born in Switzerland he emigrated to the United States where he devoted himself to archaeological and ethnological work among the Indians of the South- Western United States, Mexico and South America. He became the leading authority on the history of the region, and one of the leading authorities on its prehistoric civilization. His publications include: On the Art of War and Mode of Warfare of the Ancient Mexicans (1877), Report on the Ruins of the Pueblo of Pecos (1881), Final Report of Investigations Among the Indians of the South- Western United States (1890-1892, 2 vols. ), The Delight Makers (1890) and The Gilded Man (1893).
