He then went to Canada with the 49th and remained there, eventually becoming Colonel of the 1st Toronto Militia. He was one of the greatest and most venturesome leaders in the War of 1812. The commander of a troop dubbed the Bloody Boys, he practiced a form of guerilla warfare, at the time considered highly unconventional. He later took part in the suppression of the 1837 Canada Rebellion. This biography was written by his granddaughter, and originally published in 1894. |
