Publisher Description:
The Ruin: Survival is the summer of Cliff Kelly's sojourn to regain his self-worth after years of persistent bullying by students, a teacher and severe punishment at home. It focuses on the summer after Cliff Kelly decides to remain in the ruin after running away from home. He has nothing with him except his .22 single shot rifle and a box of shells, a change of clothing and a journal. The rifle he can't use without being discovered in his hideout a mile and a half from home. To make the clothes last he has to learn how to clean them. The journal has valuable information on the edible plants growing in the canyon, and clippings about tools and crafts of the ancients who once inhabited the 4 Corners of the Colorado area. He must learn, not only to survive, but gather and store enough food for winter if he is going to stay there. Although resources abound in the desert canyon, they are only usable if he learns which are edible and storable and he can devise means to store and prepare them. He must also learn to hunt as the primitives did, tan hides, and weave cloth using fibre from plants growing in the canyon. And at the 7,000 foot elevation he has to amass a foot supply to survive an eight month winter within a three and a half month summer. The Ruin: Survival is volume two of three of what was originally published in 2010 as The Ruin, which in one volume encompassed a year. This new series is redesigned with larger type for easier reading.
