The time of this docunovel is 1986 I have retired with the rank of Detective 1st . Inspector Plato Gomez retired in 1986 (under protest) because of injuries suffered in a gunfight. He had a spinal fusion. We had a mutual dream of going private. He got the business established; I heard he had to promise that I, would be following, to get some clients but that just a rumor you understand. We didn't expect to be working together as much as we had for the past two decades. What follows is what happened when I got there. Ships in the desert passing in the night. There once was a man names Harry Karafin. In 1967, Karafin, then fifty-one and a respected investigative reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer, was exposed as having used his position to extort Philadelphia area businesses. Inquirer editors were forced, in print, to call their employee of twenty-nine years "a remarkably adept shakedown artist." How did he do it? the editors asked. Their answer: "Gall. Cruelty.
