Publisher Description:
THE SECRET SHARER Dramatic Sailing adventure A heroic Chief Mate is falsely accused of murder after being forced to kill a frightened sailor during a hurricane. LEGGATT works on a merchant ship called the SEPHORA near the Gulf of Siam. Its Captain, ARCHIBALD is engaged to a younger woman FLORA, who is not wanted on the vessel because she is seen as a bad omen. Once the Sephora is at sea it is nearly destroyed by a hurricane. When Leggatt orders a seaman to help 'reef the foresail' to save the ship the man attacks him with a knife. Leggatt is forced to strangle the sailor in self defense. He is quickly accused of murder, held prisoner for a short time, and then jumps overboard to avoid being hung. CAPTAIN FLAX commands the cargo vessel STAR OF INDIA. He is unfamiliar with his ship and crew having recently joined their company. While alone at night on lookout duty, Captain Flax soon encounters a tired swimmer holding on to the side of his ship. He helps Leggatt aboard, hides him in his private cabin, and immediately learns of the swimmer's past. Captain Archibald boards the Star of India to question its crew and look for his missing prisoner, but swiftly abandons the search. Meanwhile his fianc e Flora has fallen overboard from the Sephora. He refuses to look for her saying she was "bad luck to start with." Captain Flax brings the Star of India close enough to land to allow Leggatt to swim away, though this risky maneuver nearly sends his ship into the rocks. Leggatt swims to an island where he finds Flora and they soon fall in love. Captain Archibald and his crew come ashore to search for him, only to be taken prisoner by angry natives. Archibald is eventually set adrift alone in the crippled Sephora leaving his mutinous crew with natives who have accepted them into their tribe.
