Publisher Description:
The use of dry wells to dispose of stormwater runoff from roads and urbanized areas on both public and private land on the Island of Hawai'i is widespread (fig. 1). Some of the water that flows into the dry wells comes from runoff that would otherwise have flowed to the ocean through surfacedrainage systems. Dry wells reroute this water from the surface system to the groundwater flow system. Most of the water still ultimately flows to the ocean, but it is subject to processes in the groundwater system and in most cases will discharge in a different location in the ocean than it would have if it remained in the surface system.
