Publisher Description: Following the success of Escape From Destiny, Mikelle Fraizer returns the former Wehrmacht officer Max Von Strasser to action in a tale of survival after World War II. Max has gathered former German soldiers at a farm near Villiprott in western Germany, and attempts to shut out the outside world as he raises thoroughbred horses. A rough-hewn ex-seaman named Karl Sommer comes to the farm and asks for employment as the security chief, and security is needed, as civilians roam the streets, searching for anything to steal. Food is scarce, children have formed into gangs, and only the high walls and chained gate keep them out. A couple of teenagers infiltrate the property, steal four horses and set fire to the barn. Karl is nearly killed in the blaze and admits his failure to maintain security. He seeks to prove himself to Max, and shows his boss how abiding by old-fashioned principles will not allow them to prosper in a lawless society. Hans Fischer, the maimed lieutenant of Escape From Destiny, has his own problems. He finds himself torn between his attraction to Max's young, beautiful wife, Cecile, and his adoration of Max. To complicate matters, an American girl from Texas arrives for a visit and finds Hans very attractive, to the young lieutenant's dismay. The tom-boyish girl is more than willing to join in the pursuit of the horse thieves - and of Hans Fischer. This latest story is set in 1946 and is based on historical information about the time and place. |
