Publisher Description:
A thousand years ago-war. Devastation beyond what the first races could imagine. From far away, the Shadow Kings, humans who had learned their craft and magic from both Dwarves and Elves, returned to their homeland with the knowledge and strength of Seven Swords. They utterly destroyed their own homeland, leaving only ash. The elder races feel guilty that they contributed to death and destruction by revealing deep secrets to humans who were not ready, but the gutting of the Lasterian Empire was only the beginning. Leading an army of hellish creatures, created by magic twisted nature, barbarians and mercenaries, the Shadow Kings returned the lands of their peers to wage war. In the end, with the combined races of Elves, Dwarves and Humans, the Shadow Kings were defeated, but the war took its toll. The Dwarves wanted nothing else to do with non-Dwarves, happy to forget what they had contributed to the near disaster. The humans set about populating the land, setting up towns and the massive City State. The Elves, those who had encouraged the training of the Shadow Kings in magic and weaponry, found their race sundered. Half returned home to Answeden while the other half of their race moved northwest to the ocean and became known as "The Darklings". Cooperation, brotherhood, and peace among the races were tenuous at best, isolationist and bigoted at its worst. A Darkling of ill-repute, Kell, a sword for hire, acquired a new contract with a fortune hunter named Dent. Dent is known for his hatred of Darklings, as are most humans. Kell is known for killing any human who gets in his way. Now, the two are about to contract for the most dangerous of missions. The question remains as to whether a Darkling and human can work together for more than a day without murder, especially when both are very good at what they do, and both hold an amazing secret-they each have one of the seven magical swords
