Later in life, the author discovered a latent passion for old cars. In 1979, he bought a rotted-out 1939 Ford convertible coupe and, over seven years, restored the car with the help of a restoration shop. Car designs in the immediate post-war period were warmed over pre-war designs. Starting in 1949, American car design took a leap forward, along with engine and transmission design.
