-FOREWORD- The D.W. Field Park Association was founded by Barbara Renn Shinnick in 1998. Its primary purpose was to show community support for placing the park on the National Register of Historic Places. It was felt that this step would help protect the Park from the ever present threat of commercial and real estate encroachment. For several years signatures were collected at events in the park and city wide. These petitions along with a detailed description and history of the Park compiled by Mrs. Shinnick were submitted to the Massachusetts Historical Commission. After review they were forwarded to the National Commission of Historic Places in Washington. Finally in 2000 the goal was reached and the Park was listed on the National Register. At this time having accomplished its mission there was a debate about the Association's future. After extensive discussion a decision was reached, rather than disband the organization it would become a watch dog, a sentry for the Park. The D.W. Field Park Association continues in this role today, as well as sponsoring family centered activities such as nature walks, fishing derbies, clean up days and Towerfest. The D.W. Field Association is committed to perpetuating Mr. Field's wishes: "My desire is for all segments of my community to come together for quiet recreation, for enlightenment and for the simple pleasure of landscape appreciation." Patricia C. Houle, current President and past Vice President. -INTRODUCTION- This book is a compilation. It has been written to ensure that the history of Daniel Waldo Field and D.W. Field Park is known and available. It has also been written to highlight and promote the good work of the D.W. Field Park Association. Special thanks to Patricia Houle for her many hours in assisting with the design and publishing of this book. Thank you also to my older brother-Richard P. Bingham-who has an uncanny ability to find the errors. In the first section is the reprint of the book-Daniel Waldo Field, Impressions of Those Who know Him. The Appendix Includes: The National Register of Historic Places Registration Form, October 2, 2000. Becoming registered as a Historical Place was due to the tireless efforts of Barbara Renn Shinnick. D.W. Field's Obituary. Brockton's New Park, by Thomas S. Roy, 1926. An article from the Brockton Enterprise explaining D.W Field Park Association-its genesis, and its on-going goals and activities-written by Barbara Renn Shinnick-the founder of the D.W. Field Park Association. In the spirit of DWF -Kenneth E. Bingham
