Publisher Description:
His obsession with the public opinion costs him his life. He repeatedly began to tell of his adventures, lengthening his story every day, each time adding a new proof. He made the most energetic protestations, the most solemn oaths which he could think of, which he used to prepare in his desperate hours of solitude. His mind was entirely occupied and obsessed by the public opinion, how the others see him, how the others describe him and what the others tell behind his back. He just wanted to prove his innocence; the more complicated his defense, the more artful his argument, the less he was believed. He was visibly wasting away; he was not able to prove his innocence. He had exhausted himself in vain, in useless efforts. The jokers now made him to tell his story in order to prove his innocence; they just wanted to amuse themselves and laughed at him. His heart, mind and spirit were obsessed with the public opinion; as the result his mind was struck at the root, his heart weaken by the injustice of the suspicion upon him, he was bedridden, sick and delirious. He was totally incapable of doing what they accused him, but his innocence seemed to him impossible to prove. In his delirious mind he could not realize that his obsession leading him to the self-destruction. Why does he insist on explaining his story to the public again and again? No one believed him and he was desperately seeking their approval. They cruelly denied him. He had another alternative: to keep his silence and lets time passes.
