Publisher Description: The loss of firearms by federal law enforcement agencies poses serious risks to the public, including the risks that missing firearms may be used to inflict bodily harm or to further criminal activity. In 2003, the General Accounting Office, now known as the Government Accountability Office (GAO), reported the National Park Service was missing, lost, or had 133 firearms stolen from them.1 Five years later, two of those firearms were discovered in a Georgia pawn shop. An Office of Inspector General (OIG) for the Department of the Interior (DOI) investigation revealed that a retired commissioned law enforcement manager had taken advantage of weak internal accountability measures and stole the weapons prior to retiring. Both he and his son later pawned those firearms for cash. |
