Publisher Description:
This volume is for lovers and students of the poetry of Horace. It is the way of approaching Horace in the spirit of the men of the Humanistic and Renaissance Age. Other books intended to do this, as well. This one, however, let the key-interpreters and commentators on Horace's works speak directly to us. The book includes the original Latin texts of the commentaries and a translation of it into English. The Latin text and the English translation introduce so many individuals, their deeds and thoughts, with historical facts of the Latin Classic Age, that the editor-translator thought that some information was needed, in many instances, about them. Thus, the End-Notes are an addition and they have been made by the author. This book, therefore, may be used for various purposes: Latin reading, Cultural evolution analysis, Criticism on Horace, History learning, Language variation, Latin literature, Comparative traditions, and European intellectual interaction in the Humanistic and Renaissance Age. The comments of Parrhasius are always presented first; then those of Acron and Porphyrio, from earlier times, and last there comes most of the time the remarkable criticism of Glareanus on Acron and Porphyrio. Two-indexes are provided, one in Latin and one in English: By using them, discoveries can pleasingly be made by the motivated reader.
