The South Carolina 9th Infantry Regiment was originally organized in April 1861, for a term of one year's service. The unit was sent to Virginia and assigned to General Private. R. Jones' Brigade, Department of Northern Virginia. Rather than reorganizing the regiment disbanded in April 1862, with many of the men and officers joining other South Carolina regiments. Some of the officers and men of Company C, subsequently served in Company E, Palmetto Regiment Sharpshooters SC. A few served in 2nd Company C 6th SC Infantry. Some served in 2nd Company E SC Infantry, and others in 2nd Company K 6th SC Infantry. Companies Of The SC 9th Infantry Regiment Company A - Lancaster County - Lancaster Greys. Became Company A of the SC 5th Infantry Regiment in 1862. Company B - Richland County Company C - Spartanburg County Company D. Sumter and Clarendon Counties - Darlington Sentinels. Joined the Palmetto Sharpshooters in 1862. Company E - Kershaw County Company F - Sumter and Chesterfield Counties Company G. Darlington County - Hartsville Light Infantry. Became Company E of the SC 6th Infantry Regiment in 1862. Company H - Edgefield County Company I. Clarendon County Company K - Lexington County - Pickens Sentinels. Joined the Palmetto Sharpshooters in 1862.
