Publisher Description:
Charles takes the family to Denver and delivers the Clydesdales. Then he continues on to Vallejo with Bernard and Evelyn. Charles returns East with his two jockeys and his two best horses for the big race at Saratoga Downs, in New York. A fist fight, close races, and the purchase of several top rated horses highlight his trip. Charles returns to Philadelphia and keeps his promise to Leland and Mattie. He takes their bright eighteen-year-old son to Washington and enrolls him in college to become a doctor. While in Washington, he meets a bright young bartender and offers him a job at his restaurant in Philadelphia. Charles returns to Vallejo and encounters a problem with the city council of Vallejo. They're trying to force Charles to move his prospective businesses to a location that would benefit Mayor John Ramstad. Charles ends up in a heated court battle, and the outcome jeopardizes Charle's future in Vallejo. Charles returns to San Francisco and is told someone set fire to his new store. The fire had been contained but had resulted in severe damage. The security guard that had been hired is missing, and Charles suspects he has been murdered. After some investigation, Charles thinks he knows who is responsible, but proving it is another matter. Several of the men responsible for the missing security guard and the fire turn out to be relatives of the Police Chief. Charles is warned to stay out of the investigation, but he doesn't give up and is delivered a severe warning from the Chief of Police, forcing Charles to seek help from the U.S. Marshals.
