Publisher Description:
The Underground Railroad. A phenomenon of American history. An unorganized organization with thousands of participants. Most didn't know each other. Just heard about the next stop on the line and nothing else. It was secretive for safety of the members. It was successful in guiding 100,000 enslaved people to freedom. Thousands of heroes working on this railroad and thousands of heroes escaping from slavery. America has always been the home of the brave. This play only touched on a very few examples of the participants. There was nothing official. It was secret. It was sort of like fast-growing roots of a tree. The network just kept spreading. More and more people heard about it and wanted to be part of it, even in southern cities like Baltimore The Underground Railroad was the crowning glory of the anti-slavery movement. Many thousands of people were active, blacks and whites working together to alleviate the terrible sin of slavery and help fugitive slaves to freedom. All Americans should be proud of our ancestors who made it happen. Self-sacrificing, courageous, trustworthy, and loving their fellow people.
