After serving with the Army of New Mexico The 5th Texas Cavalry was assigned to Green's, Hardeman's, and Debray's Brigade in the Trans-Mississippi Department. The regiment fought in Louisiana and reported 99 casualties at Cox's Plantation and 7 at Bayou Bourbeau. Later it moved to Huntsville, Texas, and disbanded before the surrender in June, 1865. Companies of the Texas 5th Cavalry Regiment Company A - CPT John S. Shropshire, promoted Major 21 February 1862, killed at Glorieta Company B- CPT Willis L. Lang, killed Val Verde Company C - CPT Denman W. Shannon, promoted Major 28 March 1862, LTC 4 May 1863, Taken prisoner and held after assault on Fort Butler, Louisiana.
