Publisher Description:
Winner of a 2015 NC Society of Historians award. Contains much new information (brought together in one place for the first time) about the famous early American road that once ran from Quaker Meadows near Morganton, NC, to Jonesborough, TN. Focusing primarily on the modern Burke County portion of the road, the evidence explored includes the earliest maps, old road orders, journals of early travelers, and the area's land grants. One section explores the issue of whether historian Lyman Draper got the North Cove to Quaker Meadows route wrong in his 1881 classic work, Kings Mountain and Its Heroes. There are numerous maps, drawings and photos, in particular a GPS map of the formerly "lost" section that runs from Linville Mountain directly to Linville River. The second half of the book is devoted to brief studies of the occasionally surprising people who traveled the road in its heyday. Also by these authors: Glimpses of Fonta Flora (2011) and In The Web - The Crisp & Woodard Families of 19th Century Burke County (2019).
